With the release date of June 7th, 2011, Morbid Angel’s “Illud Divinum Insanus” promise to captivate audiences around the world… But will it deliver.
I was a true Morbid Angel fan during the 90′s and I know how much influence this band has had and how much they have done for the Death Metal scene. Having said that, I am very disappointed in the latest installment by the band. After a 8 years hiatus, I was really exited when I got the Press download link from Season of Mist Records thinking “This is it” finally an album that can rock my socks off, but nothing could have been further from the truth.
After a the Intro entitled “Omni Potens”, the damage really starts with the following song entitled “Too Extreme!” This is by far the worst song I have ever listen to in a Metal album, in a Death Metal album at that. Too Extreme is a repetitive bass sound and a drum machine. That’s right, a drum machine. Now if you don’t know this, Morbid Angel drummer is no other than Pete “Commando” Sandoval, One of the best Death Metal drummers and a master of the craft which he himself pioneered. But somehow they have decided to use a drum machine. Go figure. As if the music to “Too Extreme” wasn’t bad enough, the lyrics are even worst. Now I know what Steve Tucker meant when he said “There were some issues I had with people’s commitment and desire” after parting ways with the band.
I wish I could tell you this was the worst of it but I can’t. The songs entitled “I Am Morbid” and “Radikult” would feel right at home in a Slipnot or any Nu Metal album. This two songs suffer from the same sickness as “Too Extreme” (minus the drum machine). Morbid Angel, what happen?
Even with a few “OK” songs, the album really didn’t do it for me. David Vincent voice was ok for the band’s earlier years but now it just sounds out-dated and not Death Metal enough. With a heavy heart I must say that Morbid Angel’s “Illud Divinum Insanus” is a disappointment to all that is great in metal. I just hope that they’ll get right back up and not suffer from the “Metallica” sickness.
