Out This Week: NECROPANTHER – Oblivion Jones: A Tale Of False Consciousness EP

Denver’s Masters of the metal NECROPANTHER return with a brand new EP, “Oblivion Jones: A Tale Of False Consciousness,” hitting shelves on May 1st.

These guys are notorious for pushing the boundaries and fusing such genres as death, thrash, and black metal into face-melting riffs that would serve as the perfect accompaniment in a dystopian future movie. These guys have earned quite a reputation for varied and always outstanding music, and they’ve been one of the most exciting propositions on the music scene since 2014.

This new EP, “Oblivion Jones,” is a four-song story that guitarist Joe Johnson has written and produced. The fictional artist Oblivion Jones, getting some crazy surprise way after he’s dead, meets “near-future dystopia” with “cybernetic resurrection.”

Musically, NECROPANTHER keeps things interesting. There are even portions of spoken word, to go along with bass solos that would sound at home in the most epic of songs and seemingly random spots in which to change the mood. They’ve even brought in accomplished jazz musician Rico Jones to add some killer saxophone to all four tracks.

For those purist metal fans—don’t worry. It’s all still there. “Oblivion Jones” mashes together thrash, doom, melodic death, and NWOBHM styles into one huge metal experience.

The EP also contains bonus tracks, featuring “sans sax” versions of all four songs, in case one really requires a pure, unadulterated fix.

“Oblivion Jones: A Tale Of False Consciousness” was recorded in Denver by their long-time collaborator Felipe Patino and featured a killing mix and mastering by Max Sherman.
