Viejas Arena is San Diego State University’s on-campus arena, opened in 1997 as Cox Arena on the site of the historic Aztec Bowl and renamed Viejas Arena on July 1, 2009. Home to Aztecs basketball, it seats 12,414 for games and, depending on configuration, can shrink to about 3,000 or hold as many as 13,500 for concerts.
Its open-air concourse is a San Diego signature, and the arena’s concert history includes Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, Eric Clapton and the 2001 Billy Joel and Elton John tour opener. For big touring shows that want an indoor room, it’s one of the region’s main arena stops.
