The Observatory North Park lives inside the historic North Park Theatre at 2891 University Ave., a 1,200-seat movie house that opened Jan. 17, 1929. It closed in 1989, was revived as a live performance venue in 2005, and in 2015 was sold to the owners of Santa Ana’s Observatory, who reopened it under its current name. Live Nation acquired it in 2019.
Today it’s a 1,100-capacity general-admission room with a tiered floor, so sightlines hold up even at the back. It’s a key mid-size North Park stage for touring bands that have outgrown the clubs, with a full bar, the West Coast Tavern restaurant next door and a parking structure right across the street.
