Belly Up

The Belly Up has been a Solana Beach institution since 1974, when it opened with a couple of mics and no stage. The club at 143 S. Cedros Ave., two blocks from the beach, holds up to 600 people, and its history runs from John Lee Hooker, Etta James and BB King to underplays by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a 2015 private show by the Rolling Stones.

It isn’t a metal room by trade, but the Belly Up is one of North County’s best-known clubs for touring acts, with a state-of-the-art sound and lighting rig and a strict 21+ door. Heavier bills land here too, from the Melvins to King Buffalo, so it’s worth watching the calendar if you live north of the city.
