Rage Against the Machine Coachella 2027 plans are reportedly off the table. According to a TMZ report, the band passed on an offer to play next year’s festival. The report, based on unnamed sources, says Coachella organizers wanted both Rage Against the Machine and BTS for the 2027 edition and that both groups passed. Neither the band nor Goldenvoice has commented, and the 2027 lineup has not been announced on Coachella’s official site.
What the Rage Against the Machine Coachella 2027 Report Says
TMZ reported Oct. 30 that “sources with direct knowledge” say Dua Lipa, SZA and Tame Impala are “nearly confirmed” as performers for Coachella 2027. The outlet’s sources say organizers “also wanted BTS and Rage Against the Machine to hit the stage, but both groups passed.” TMZ says the full lineup will be announced soon.
TMZ does not say what kind of slot Rage Against the Machine was reportedly offered. Stereogum describes the offers to RATM and BTS as headlining offers. Last month, HITS Daily Double reported that Dua Lipa and Tame Impala were likely to headline, according to Stereogum.
Per TMZ, Coachella 2027 runs April 9-11 and April 16-18 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.
Rage Against the Machine Coachella History, From 1999 to 2020
The reported Rage Against the Machine Coachella 2027 pass is notable because of the band’s long history with the festival. Rage Against the Machine headlined the first Coachella, held Oct. 9-10, 1999, alongside Beck and Tool. The band returned as a headliner in 2007, a reunion-era set on a bill topped by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Björk.
Rage Against the Machine were also booked to headline Coachella 2020 with Travis Scott and Frank Ocean, but that festival was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Stereogum, the band hasn’t played live since finishing its most recent reunion tour in 2022.
Who Is Reportedly Playing Coachella 2027
If the reports hold, Coachella 2027 would be led by three pop and psych-pop acts. Stereogum notes Tame Impala has played Coachella four times, including a headlining set in 2019. SZA has played the festival twice. Dua Lipa has never played Coachella, and neither has BTS.
Stereogum also notes that Coachella announced its 2026 lineup in September. As of Oct. 30, the 2027 lineup had not been released.
Zack de la Rocha Gives a Rare Interview
The report landed the same day Stereogum highlighted a rare interview with Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha, given to the Spanish-language outlet Binaural at an exhibition for photographer Glen E. Friedman. De la Rocha talked about Turnstile, who recently covered his pre-RATM band Inside Out. He did not address Coachella in the portions Stereogum quoted.
Guitarist Tom Morello served as musical director for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath’s farewell show, now in theaters as the Back to the Beginning film.
