Trivium Announce ‘Crown in the Grave’ Album, Bring Tour to Inglewood Dec. 4

Trivium Announce ‘Crown in the Grave’ Album, Bring Tour to Inglewood Dec. 4

Trivium’s new record, “Crown in the Grave,” lands Nov. 20 on Roadrunner Records, and the Trivium Crown in the Grave era kicked off Thursday with the title track and video, per Blabbermouth. It’s the band’s first studio album with Alex Rüdinger officially on drums, and they bring it to YouTube Theater in Inglewood on Friday, Dec. 4. No San Diego date has been announced, so Inglewood is the closest stop.

Trivium Crown in the Grave: what we know

Matt Heafy, Corey Beaulieu, Paolo Gregoletto and Rüdinger made the record at The Hangar, the band’s own studio in Orlando. Longtime producer Josh Wilbur is back, and Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Amon Amarth) mixed a Trivium record for the first time. Rüdinger nearly joined back in 2015. “It happened when it was meant to,” Heafy says. “Rüdi didn’t just kill it on the drums; his contributions as a writer made a huge difference.”

Gregoletto pointed the band toward Akira Kurosawa’s “Throne of Blood,” the director’s take on Macbeth set in feudal Japan. That led into Japanese horror and cinema from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, and the bassist says that “darker, ghostly atmosphere” set the rules for the music, lyrics and artwork. He also names Metallica’s Black Album, Megadeth’s “Countdown to Extinction” and Soundgarden’s “Superunknown” as references, records where “the choruses are so important.”

We built our studio so we could give ourselves the time and space to figure out exactly what an eleventh Trivium record should be, and ‘Crown In The Grave’ is the answer we arrived at. It honors where we’ve been without living in the past, and pushes into new territory without abandoning what makes us Trivium.

Per the press release, Heafy turned to therapy and medication after a stretch of mental health struggles, injuries and anxiety. “I stopped trying to be safe and perfect at every show,” he says. “With all of the changes Trivium went through, it’s like a brand new band.”

Pavel Trebukhin directed the official video. Blabbermouth describes it as a post-apocalyptic clip inspired by Japanese Noh theater, set in a smoke-filled dojo. Consequence says the song leans heavy and direct rather than proggy.

Trivium in Inglewood: who’s on the bill

The North American run starts Nov. 5 in St. Petersburg, Fla., and wraps Dec. 19 in Charlotte, N.C. The tour press lists In Flames, Orbit Culture, Fit For An Autopsy and Frozen Soul, but not every night gets all four. The Live Nation listing for Inglewood shows Trivium, In Flames, Orbit Culture and Frozen Soul, with no Fit For An Autopsy. The dates as published by Theprp back that up: Fit For An Autopsy plays Nov. 5-18, and Orbit Culture takes over from Nov. 20 through the end of the run. Blabbermouth’s Thursday story lists all four support acts without that split. Unless the band or venue says otherwise, don’t expect Fit For An Autopsy in Inglewood.
